Easily Delete All Wordpress Spam Comments Using phpMyAdmin

For the frequent comment posters in Raymond.CC Blog, you might have noticed an addition of random words to type in before your comment gets in. Well this blog site has been attacked by some people that has nothing else better to do in their life. Yesterday while I was writing an article, I noticed that the pending comments awaiting for moderation shows about 800+! I normally check for pending comments every few hours a day and it’s impossible for the comments to grow that much in such a short while. At first I thought those spam bots has found a new way to bypass Akismet but seeing those comments, it looked like it had been done by some script kiddie.
delete wordpress spam
The Wordpress spam comment attack is pretty smart because it is definitely automated and all the IP address were different. I assume the wordpress comment spamming tool uses a list of open proxy and tries to post comments in every article. Fortunately I have configured all comments to be moderated so that inappropriate comments doesn’t get posted out and create unnecessary drama.

If your Wordpress site has been attacked by similar comments spamming tool, here’s what you can do to easily delete all Wordpress spam comments using phpMyAdmin and implement a simple CAPTCHA system to make the spammer’s life difficult.

Since the spam comments keeps in coming in, I had to do something to stop it first. Log in to your Wordpress Admin site, go to Settings > Discussion and CHECK “Users must be registered and logged in to comment“. Now the spam comments should stop since it requires an account. To be on the safe side, disable registration by going to Settings > General and UNCHECK “Anyone can register“.

When you’ve done both of the steps above, no comments will get in.

Now to clean up the spam that’s in moderation. Log in to phpMyAdmin, select the database that has Wordpress installed and go to SQL tab. Type the following command below and click the Go button.

delete from wp_comments where comment_approved = '0'

phpMyAdmin delete wordpress spam comments
As you can see at the screenshot above, phpMyAdmin took less than 0.1 seconds to clean up 886 spam comments.

There are a few Wordpress plugins that can help you implement CAPTCHA in your comment form. As for me, I installed reCAPTCHA because other than preventing easy comment spamming, it also helps to digitize books, newspapers and old time radio shows. Simply download wp-reCAPTCHA, drop it in plugins folder and activate. Sign up for a free reCAPTCHA account to get public and private key. Enter both keys in your Wordrpess’ Settings > reCAPTCHA.

Finally you will need to allow your visitors to post comments. Go back to Settings > Discussion and UNCHECK “Users must be registered and logged in to comment“.

The spammer took hours to spam the comment form but it took me less than 1 second to clean up the spam and another 3 minutes to install reCAPTCHA in my comment form. Do the math and the spammer sure looks silly. reCAPTCHA is not impossible to crack but the spammers would have to spend even more of their precious time and effort to do something that they don’t even gain anything from it.

My Dell XPS M1330 Zapped Me

I just got hit by an electrical shock when my left index finger touched the brushed aluminium panel encasing the touchpad of my laptop. The discharge was strong enough to give me a jolt me and temporarily numbed the tip of the finger. A search on Google revealed that this problem occurs in Dell XPS series, MacBook Pro and other makes of laptops with similar metal panels. I am currently using the Dell XPS M1330. Hopefully, this is just a static discharge instead of an electrical leakage of the system. My laptop is already connected to the power socket via a three-pin plug.

Call for public inquiry on how the half-a-trillion ringgit contributed by Petronas to government past 33 years and the RM15.2 billion ringgit royalty to Terengganu from 2000-2009 have been properly spent and accounted for

Former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir has raised a very pertinent question – where have the close to half-a-trillion ringgit, to be exact RM426.6 billion, of petro-ringgit from Petronas to the government in the past 33 years since 1976 gone? Jawapan Parlimen : Jumlah Minima Bankrap

Soalan : Tuan Manikavasagam a/l Sundaram [Kapar] minta Perdana Menteri menyatakan adakah Kerajan bercadang untuk meningkatkan jumlah minimum muflis (bankrap) daripada 30 ribu kepada 50 ribu . Jika ya bila, dan jika tidak kenapa?

Jawapan : YB Dato Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz , Menteri Di Jabatan Perdana Menteri.

Tuan Yang Di Pertua,

Sekian. Terima kasih

Keputusan Pembinaan Jeti Pulau Ketam Di Hargai

Apabila Kerajaan Pakatan Rakyat Selangor memberi Air Percuma , mereka kata kita kehilangan pembangunan fizikal .

Who is at fault here?

My family had dinner at the nearby Mamak shop yesterday. The waiters misunderstood my mother’s instructions and served us more than we had ordered. Mom also thought they forgot Dad’s Roti Canai. She got a little frustrated and brought this matter up with the waiters. It turned into a light argument as I started to eat my piece.

Dad became affected by the argument between Mom and one of the waiters, and he added his share of displeasure. I guess the waiter eventually threw up his hands and stepped away. Alarmed by this, my Dad raised his voice - the very voice that terrified me as a child.

Sensing his aggression, Mom and I ate and minded our own business, hoping the silence will pacify Dad.

I was tempted to tell him immediately that it wasn’t nice to yell at people especially in public.

But I knew better than to say anything when I remembered how Dad punished himself two days ago after I got upset with him for gobbling down all the chocolate cookies.

I could only hope the Mamak shop guys sensed that something wasn’t quite right with my dad so that they will not take his aggression to heart.

As you can see, the actions of my mother and I are closely related to dad’s odd behaviors.

Psychologists use a number of theories to guide their approaches to treating people with mental problems. The image of a couch facing a passive therapist have long passed. Contemporary theorists today actively approach problems and aim to solve present problems rather than looking to the past for meanings.

An example of contemporary psychology is Systems Theory. According to this theory, the state of our minds, our actions, and behaviors are interdependent within the family. When someone in the family is thought to have mental problems and maladaptive behaviors, the therapist will work with the patient, and may also have additional sessions with other family members who are thought to have strong influences on the patient’s behavior. In System Theory, the family or other members in the family system may really be the one that is problematic while the patient’s maladaptive behavior is a symptom of the larger problem.

Therefore, I need to find a therapist who not only sees my dad, but a therapist who uses systems theory as a guide to his or her therapeutic approaches.

If mom did not yell “Stupid husband!”. Dad will not yell “Idiot wife!”.

Retiring and retired

The 4Mbps Streamyx has been up and running at my Penang home since yesterday. Fingers crossed.
It costs me RM160 per month.

I have also made redundancy redundant.

Finally, I have to retire my first-generation, 26-month old Maxis HSDPA broadband account, a saving of RM128 per month. My locus standi to complain against Maxis is now limited to voice account. (I am returning the personal signal repeater soon.)

With that, I am also retiring my 15-month old Celcom HSDPA broadband account, a further saving of RM98 per month. My locus standi to complain against Celcom is now limited to the Blackberry account (from which I mobile Twitter), still paying RM128 per month.

DiGi Wireless Broadband (read: Likely Average Speed of 700kbps, but I do get 1.4 to 1.8Mbps in Penang) will now have to carry out the mission critical and always-on tasks whenever I travel as a road warrior. A further commitment of RM108.00 per month.

Current Internet subscriptions: RM268.00

Terminated Internet subscriptions: RM226.00

Net additional Internet costs: RM42.00, for a reasonable enhancement of Internet speed for fixed/Home WiFi and mobile wireless broadband. That's excluding the eat-all-you-can Celcom/Vodafone Blackberry package.

Yeah, freedom to information does come with a cost.

I hope to switch to the 4Mbps Streamyx package for my Subang Jaya home, soon. It's only 2Mbps right now.

Night cruise on the Himiko waterbus

It seems that we have reached the second half of 2009. After completing '3PM', my third short film in six months yesterday afternoon, I can't help but feel a little wistful, a little melancholic, the familiar condition known as post-creativity depression is back.

So despite having finished my film, I actually chose to remain in the editing lab, and finally at night, I took out snippets of videos I shot more than a week ago with my own camera and looked through them, just so I could edit them and give myself something to do.

On the 20th of June, Lia the Artist told me and Niklas about the futuristic-looking waterbus "Himiko", designed by famed Japanese animator Reiji (or Leiji) Matsumoto ("Captain Harlock", "Spaceship Yamato", "Galaxy Express 999").

Water Bus

Waterbus Himiko in front of Rainbow Bridge

Lia's friend, Nakajima, a drummer and cahone player, was going to have a performance on Himiko.

The drummer Nakajima

Prior to boarding Himiko, we took a group photo.

First group photo in front of Himiko

We couldn't see the waterbus in the photo. So we took ANOTHER group photo.

2nd group photo in front of Himiko waterbus

Luckily I remained handsome in both photos, so I thought it was fine.

This is Lia's camera, it's injured, hence the plaster.

Lia's injured camera

And so we started boarding the waterbus.

Himiko the futuristic water bus

It looks like this from the inside.

Interior of water bus Himiko

We took yet another group photo in Himiko, because, you can never get enough of those. I'm still handsome.

Another group photo, in Himiko

Niklas took my camera and showed us the joys of shooting long exposure photographs.

Lia and I. A long exposure photo

Impressed with what I saw, I attempted to shoot some too.

Niklas blinded by light

Not too clear though.

I took another, it was better.

Lia. Long exposure photograph

Encouraged by the results, I snapped a few more.

Lia surrounded by blinding light

Niklas still blinded by light

Lia and Niklas

Each to varying degrees of success.

In the end Lia got pretty bored with my crap photography skills.

Lia was bored

Impatient, even.

Lia loses patience.

So I stopped.

Lia decided to take my camera and show me how photos like these were really taken. And so she did. Meanwhile, Niklas, too bored with our amateurish attempts at photography, turned away.

Well, despite being kinda out of focus, I remain cute, so I will say that Lia's photo was a decent attempt.

Lia tries out my camera

I remember that night for its pulsating music, for the crowd of people dancing, and for the stunning scenery I saw as Himiko headed to Odaiba.

Lia swayed gracefully. An ethereal figure completely immersed into the music, disconnected from her surroundings... (until I point my camera at her, in which she would cover her face or turn away)

Niklas danced nonchalantly, occasionally he seemed as if he were brooding solemnly whilst he danced. He then scored himself some free drinks.

Nakajima performed in the end, pounding his strange-looking drum cahone (thanks, cuz) with his bare hands, sometimes so quickly that his hands became a blurry motion, the girls standing closest to him squealed in ecstasy.

The night lasted for a few hours, despite the repetition, the scenery was never boring, the glittering lights of the buildings and their kaleidoscope of colours, more luminescent when they were reflected from the surface of the sea. As the ship went back and forth between Odaiba and Hinode Pier, my mind wandered fleetingly to the the ending of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA. then I wondered whether the strobe lights were making me think seemingly unrelated things. During one of the last rounds when the Himiko docked at Odaiba, a woman puked and was carried out.

Himiko docked at night

Of course I wouldn't finish this blog post without posting a video of the cruise. For the first time ever I actually had to do some edits for the videos I shot with my Panasonic DMC-LX3 camera (up until now most of the videos I shot and uploaded here had been unedited).

So, here you go.

The Chinese lady with a shotgun

This is my friend, Zhu Dan, from China. She's really nice and friendly.

Zhu Dan with shotgun

But she's slightly intimidating because she carries a shotgun with her all the time.

Zhu Dan is inseparable from her shotgun

I've heard in my overactive imagination that many of her ex-boyfriends who pissed her off got their heads blown off. But those were the lucky ones, the not-so-lucky ones had other parts of their bodies blown off. Imagining all these with such gruesome and graphic detail makes me shudder.

Zhu Dan aiming her shotgun

But because she always has a shotgun with her, I figured she would be the perfect person to act for my Thai friend Kong's action short film, where all she had to do was to blow people up. So I introduced her to him back in April.

At the set of Kong's short film, Censor

It was Kong's first attempt at directing, and he was quite intimidated too, fearing that pissing Zhu Dan off would result in her blasting him with her shotgun too. (look carefully at where the gun was, and where it was aiming at, in the photo below)

How to Use a UPS

The benefits of a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) are clear. We all need, after all, enough time to save that important report or close that game properly, brownouts or blackouts be damned. Straight from the Tom’s Hardware Forums comes some sound advice.

Courtesy Aspstation.net

Courtesy Aspstation.net

  • “Never plug any surge suppressor or power strip into the load side of a UPS. [They] can cause the UPS to drain its battery faster than expected, or cause the UPS to shut down or trip a circuit breaker.”
  • “Never plug any device into a UPS’s battery-protected outlets that… draws a high amount of power when first turned on. This includes most printers, especially laser printers; the power they draw at start-up exceeds what the UPS can deliver.”
  • “[M]ake sure the load doesn’t exceed the UPS’s real or apparent power ratings. Most UPS’s have some type of total load indication or at least an overload indicator light to let you know that the UPS is overloaded.”
  • “Different models of UPS may have the same apparent power rating but a different real power rating… UPS designs are different and one can handle more real power than the other. A prime example is the APC Smart-UPS 750 vs. the Smart-UPS 750 XL. Both are rated 750 VA, but the XL model can handle 600W while the non-XL model can only handle 500W.”
  • “Different models of UPS may have the same apparent power rating but vastly different run times. The power rating is determined by the size and design of the inverter, while the run time is determined mainly by the battery size. The APC Smart-UPS 750 and Smart-UPS 750XL are both rated at 750VA, but when powering a 300W load, the XL model can run it for over 45 minutes, while the non-XL model has only 10 minutes of run time.”
  • “Your computer power supply rating is much greater than the amount of power your system actually draws. Many computers today have a 600W or higher power supply, but actual draw from the line is generally 300W or less, so you don’t need to spend the money on a 1500VA UPS. To find out the actual amount of power your computer is using, use an inexpensive watt meter like the Kill-A-Watt.”

Where should I bring Dad for help?

When Dad came back from a surgery to remove the Cataracts in his left eye last Wednesday, he spot a new packet of chocolate cookies my friend gave as souvenir. He guzzled everything although we had lunch together one hour ago.

I was obviously upset when I couldn’t find the packet anymore. Dad was idling in the living room when I asked “Where did the cookies go? Did you eat it? Did you finish everything? Why did you finish everything?”. Dad tried to reply. But he looked confused. “I…erh…yeah…”

He could not remember if he ate it. Or if he ate it, he could not remember if he finished it”.

At this, I retreated to the kitchen to contain my disappointment. When I came back five minutes later, I found Dad sitting at the same spot and pealing off the bandage that a nurse had used to cover a very large wound on his leg that morning. He had the distant look while doing this, without paying attention to the bandage itself.

“Dad! Why did you remove the bandage?”

He looked away and did not reply.

My heart ached. I cried recalling this episode later at night.

I am so sorry.

Dad was hurting himself because he felt guilty for hurting me.

Before Dad had the Cataracts, he would have yelled and sent his voice thundering whenever I asked him about the things he did.

The Cataracts changed him but it was neither for better nor worse. Just different.

He is confused and does not always know what he is doing. But instead of expressing his confusion in anger and rage like before, he has started to put the blame upon himself silently.

Dad has always blame himself. Seeing him peel off a necessary bandage to unveil a gruesome Diabetic wound, I understood why he steadfastly refused hospital treatment for his many health problems in the past.

My dad is hurt by his own incompetence. Maybe he believes that he deserves the pain.

Yesterday, I sent an e-mail to Marian, the Head Lecturer of my department in college asking for contact details of a Psychiatrist who visited in April. I also found out that Marian’s husband is a Psychotherapist who does Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy that can help post-stroke patients ventilate and make sense of their emotions.

But he works in Bandar Tun Razak’s HUKM. That is a long journey from my home. Dad’s blood pressure is very high and may not be able to endure traveling so far by public transport.

On the other hand, the psychiatrist who paid my college a visit works at the nearby UMMC and lectures at IMU.

I am still undecided on where to go. It’s tempting to visit HUKM because the doctor is a person related to someone I am familiar with.

Psychiatry is still an eluding realm, an unfamiliar territory to me. Unlike getting treatment for NF which I have seven years of experience, I am cautious about being mislead while seeking treatment for my father.

If I make the wrong choice for myself, I will be the only one bearing the consequences. But if I make the wrong choice for my dad, I will be implicating him.

Hilarious shop names, crazy signs and the eccentric shoppers

You know the best bit about shopping? Not the bit where you do window shopping. Or the part where you finally find the perfect pair of shoes. Oh no, the best part of shopping is coming across the weird and wonderful aspects of our society. You know the hilarious shop names, crazy signs and the eccentric shoppers. Those are what we will call the perfect twitter worthy moments!

1. No Missionary Positions Here

Dodgy

Thanks but no thanks for that mental image. Is this about your own personal preference or perhaps this is just a shop that sells dog products. You know, belts, collars, etc. If so, I would be hard pressed to explain those medium to large t-shirts in the front of the shop. Or the big Bugs Bunny figure.

2. The things we do for ice

To get ice

Erm, no halfway measures here. A full commitment is what we are looking for. Or at least less drunkenness and more focus on getting… the job done. This must be the futuristic world of man-machine love that is usually shown in dystopians movies.

3. Vader picks out a lunch meal

Darth Vader

So tell me again… why is Darth Vader and his minion walking around in a supermarket? Couldn’t get any of the other minions to pick out lunch? Well, it looks like someone is pampering the boss’s ego.

(The headline for the Malaysian Insider “No let-up as Kit Siang continues attacks against PAS ahead of Kedah trip” is not correct, as it is not reflected in the contents of its report. It implied that I was continuing to “attack” the Pakatan Rakyat government in Kedah. This is not the case. It further implied that I [...]

The Nokia E75: Designed for Idiots

Take the Nokia E75 out of the box, and you’ll see a transparent sticker plastered over the display. Apparently, Nokia received too many complaints, from people who couldn’t figure out that on some phones, the red End Call key doubles as the power button! The side-effect of this noobishness? You have to take off the display cover to start using the phone, wasting the sticker’s screen protector potential.

p1060390

Based on the attended product briefing, Nokia’s pushing the E75 as email-centric, highlighting the QWERTY keyboard that slides out from underneath the otherwise candybar-looking smartphone, as well as the email-friendly messaging app. Functionality-wise compared to the E71 however, the E75 is pretty much the same, with a different form factor and a newer version firmware to set it apart (and I was told that the same firmware is being prepared for the E71).

Melodies

We listen to classical music EVERY NIGHT these days. Apparently it's the best way to relax and wind down after a hard day's work.

My days consists of hard work … hard hard work. No, I'm not stressed out, but some people around me are very very stressed… for what reason, I have no idea. It just annoys the hell out of me that when I walk into their space I get sucked into that 'I'm so bloody tired and so tied up with work' kind of energies.

I think when the day ends, and when you shut down to go home, its time to leave your worries behind. It's hard, but its necessary. You can't carry that kind of weight around you all the time, no one can, we're all human bodies and we're not designed to carry burdens 24 hours a day. When we sleep, we're supposed to 'release' it all, and let it go. It can be done. I can't say I'm successful at letting my worries go, but I think I am able to park them some place temporary and pay full attention to 'relaxing' when I need to relax.

And God knows, everyone needs to relax every now and then.

Convert a-squared Anti-Malware v4.5 to Full Version for FREE with 1 Year Coupon Code

Nearly a year ago I’ve posted a tip on how to obtain a 1 year a-squared Anti-Malware license using a coupon code. For those that are still using it, I believe your license is about to expire and here’s a good news to you all! There is a new coupon code being circulated which allows you to convert it to a 1 year license. A year has gone by and many updates and improvements has been done on a-squared Anti-Malware. Last time it only scans for spyware but now it has integrated Ikarus scanning technology to detect and block computer virus.
free a-squared antimalware license
a-squared Anti-Malware monitors all active programs in real time for dangerous behavior (Behavior Blocking) and can detect new unknown Trojans, Worms, Viruses and other damaging programs (Zero-Day dangers) without daily updates. The signature-based security (a-squared and Ikarus double engine) ensures a very high recognition rate of known Malware such as Trojans, Worms ans Viruses.

Just follow the steps on how to get a fully licensed 1 year a-squared Anti-Malware v4.5 that normally cost $40 for FREE!

free asquared antimalware 4.5 license

1. First you’ll need to have an account with a-squared. Go to http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/account/ and signed up for one. Just enter your name and email address.

2. Check your email address and you should get an email from Emsi Software (automail@www.emsisoft.com) with the subject Your user account information – Requires verification. Note down your password.

3. Go to http://cc.emsisoft.com and login with your email and password that you got from step 2.

4. Click on Manage Licenses on the left hand sidebar and click Get license by coupon code.

5. Enter the coupon code kam-nef-max-558 and click the Convert button. You should then see that a-squared Anti-Malware has added to the list with a 1 year license period.

6. Download a-squared Anti-Malware v4.5 and install.

7. After installation, you will be prompted to enter an account to login. Enter the same email address and password that you entered in Customer Center on the program and click Log in. You now have a full version of a-squared anti-malware valid for 1 year.

It is important that you run an update after installation to download the latest signature. The first update should take a while because I had to download a total of 17MB. According to Malware Research Group test conducted on June 2009, a-squared Anti-Malware is able to catch the most malware files compared to 18 other antivirus. A big part of the malware consist of trojans or backdoors.

free a-squared anti-malware license coupon

For testing purposes, I copied 19 real current live virus that are circulating around internet and networks today and a-squared anti-malware did not block anything. When I did a scan, it manage to detect all 19 files are virus. It also managed to detect all of the older version of private stub for a crypter called BCD. Same as Microsoft Security Essentials, it could not detect the private trojan on manual scan and also when I run it even after enabling Paranoid mode.

When a-squared Anti-Malware is active, it has two processes which is a2service.exe and a2guard.exe both taking up 113MB. If you want to use a-squared Anti-Malware for on-demand scanning, disabling all real-time protection will drop the memory usage to only 10MB. If any of the background guard is enabled, the memory usage for a2service.exe instantly shoots up to nearly 100MB. During a deep scan, a-squared anti-malware never eats more than 50% of CPU uage. They developers of a-squared Anti-Malware should do something about the memory usage.

Offer still works so get it fast before it ends! Thanks to saturnguy62 for sharing this with us in forum!

YB kesal susah bertemu MB

UpToDate on the Palm Pre

Here’s some updated news since the WebOS 1.04 firmware update from Palm. Sadly, it seems you still cannot install UpToDate for PalmOS on the Palm Pre under Classic, the PalmOS emulator. This is despite there being a virtual SD card. Bulls96 in the forums has been trying and in his latest attempt, he is still getting a “white screen” when running the installation prc, with the appropriate UTD data files in the root of the virtual SD.

Nevertheless, UpToDate users can still use the excellent Pre’s browser and access the Mobile UpToDate site: http://pda.uptodate.com
Unlike the Epocrate mobile site, there doesn’t seem to be any issues when testing it with the emulator’s browser.

After logging, you get a nice and simple Search screen

utd1

The search results seem to format nicely on the browser

utd2

I understand that this is not the solution for everyone with a mobile since it depends on a good signal, and adequate data speeds which may not be the case in all corners of your hospital. Nevertheless I think if you can, it’s a viable option, at least till the problem is fixed (hopefully soon UpToDate!)
The best thing is for a native WebOS version of UpToDate and this is what we all look forward to.

Nadlique is blogging from Sydney!

Just some quick updates.

You may have noticed that I have been missing in action for quite some time. Apologies for that.

I have actually been busy with a lot of things these past few weeks.

First up, exams. Results came out today. Pretty happy with it I guess. Got two 7’s and two 6’s. Nothing will be complete without my CPL though…

After exams were out of the way, I had to fly down to Sydney to participate in something that could potentially transform my life. Unfortunately, it was an unsuccessful attempt… Amazingly dissapointing I tell you… It felt like a slit to my throat…

After that, my mum and her friends arrived in Australia and I had to bring them down to Sydney again for holidays.

So, here I am, 0600 hours in Sydney writing from my laptop with my newly acquired pre-paid wireless broadband (pretty neat little bugger this thing!).

Alright, catch you guys pretty soon!

My father is also one of you

There is something that I hadn’t tell anyone. In late 2007 after setting a cataracts surgery date for my father at University Malaya Medical Center, I took my father to the hospital’s welfare department to get help. A young social worker interviewed my father while I sat quietly in the same room. My father did most of the talking. I did not know what my father said, but we received a letter of rejection months later.

That was why his surgery at UMMC could not proceed. When I knew the contents of that letter I quickly put the letter away and suppressed my hurt.

The social worker was a young man. Maybe he could not see anything unusual with my father’s speech pattern. But anybody who meets my father for the first time can tell that something is not quite right with him so the things he says can’t be taken too seriously.

The social worker did not even bother to talk to me and chose to rely on the information my father provided.

I did not volunteer information either because it was not nice to tell someone in the presence of my father that what he said was unreliable.

So I need to go around this issue in getting the help my father deserves as a citizen of Malaysia.

I am thinking of getting him an independent Psychiatric evaluation as proof to the Social Welfare Department. And I hope my father will not take it as an insult.

GSM Palm Pre Details to be Available July 7

Well, Palm promised the British press that a July 7 on the Palm Pre is forthcoming, but word on the street is that the event will be a launch—and that we’ll finally see a GSM version of the Palm Pre go official! Other rumors making the rounds: O2 will enjoy exclusivity, and a European market launch will increase units sold for Palm (Unless, of course, the company doesn’t fix its supply problems).

Courtesy Palm

Courtesy Palm

I can see why: the (hopefully) inevitable debut of the Palm Pre on GSM networks will vastly increase the potential market, allowing use of the smartphone in many more countries throughout the world, in the hands so much more people. Especially since the Pre is easily jailbroken.

At the very least, we’ll finally see just how popular Palm’s last-stand play becomes. No details yet on specs (will they be similar to the CDMA version’s or even surpass it?) nor pricing in the UK. Stay tuned for updates!

Thanks Electronista!

One step towards normalcy

It’s the second day after dad had the cataracts in his left eye removed. Mom and I took him to the clinic where the area around his eye was cleaned by a nurse. She removed the overnight capsule that covered his eye too. Mom said Dad told the nurse five times that he wanted to remove the cataracts in his right eye as well. To which the nurse replied, “I’m not the doctor” five times according to my mother.

Later, the doctor had a look at his piece-of-work and said dad’s eye was okay. At this, dad could at last direct his request to the correct person.

Dr. Fang said we need to come back two weeks later so that he may take another look at Dad’s operated eye. We’ll set the date for the other eye then.

After leaving the doctor’s office, we had lunch at the food court upstairs before going back down to Jaya Jusco Supermarket. It became clear that my father could now see better when he spot his favorite Kraft cheese spread a few feet away and seized two bottles.

As I type this, dad’s lying down and scanning the newspaper with both hands holding it up. It’s the worst place to read in our living room. Soon, we can remove all the extra wall clocks Dad had insist to keep at corners where he most often sat and return our house back to looking a tad more normal.

KAPAR LAND-GRAB: Explain, MB orders District Officer, Land Office

Nevash Nair ,Malay Mail
Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

THE Klang District Officer will be hauled up by the Selangor government next week that wants answers to how a Datuk had managed to transfer Temporary Occupation Licences (TOL) plots in Kampung Perepat, Kapar within 24 hours.

Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim will also question several other officers from the same Land Office to ascertain why a directive by the State government to revoke the land titles given to the Datuk had not been followed. Khalid would be calling the Klang District Officer and officers from the Land Office to present the case.

Speaking to pressmen after the Selangor Executive Councillor’s meeting, Khalid said the case would be presented at the State Economy Action Meeting (MTES) within two weeks.

“We have requested that the case be presented at the MTES either this week or next week. After that, we will deliberate on the actions to be taken on this matter,” Khalid said.

When asked if the State suspects any foul play in the Kampung Perepat issue, Khalid said: “I dare not comment anything on that right now. We shall wait and see.”

On June 19, Malay Mail frontpaged the Selangor government’s promise to 17 families, who held ToLs for agricultural land in Kampung Perepat, that the plots would be returned to them after a long-drawn tussle. Khalid, when asked for his feedback on the long-running issue, did not mince his words.

“If it is illegal, we will demolish it,” he told Malay Mail. He added that he would deploy his officers to investigate the matter. But he declined comment when asked on the lengthy amount of time taken by the Klang District Office to respond to his query on the issue.

On June 22, the controversy surrounding the Kapar land-grab issue has since deepened. Kapar Member of Parliament S. Manikavasagam said when he went to the Selangor Malaysian Anti- Corruption Commission (MACC) office at Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, an MACC officer told him that three reports lodged by the Kampung Perepat pioneers, as well as the one he personally filed last year, could not be found. MACC responded by questioning one of the pioneers and a Malay Mail journalist.

Law of attraction: true in all cases

I believe in the Golden Rule of 'You reap what you sow.' And I believe that it works in all areas of life, especially the subconscious 'requests' to the universe we so subtly transmit all the time.

Like say for example, if you're an attention seeker (and I know most people, including myself, are, to a certain extent), you need to be very, very careful about the kind of attention you're seeking. Because literally, you will always reap what you sow, what happens in life will definitely work in a way that returns and gifts you what you are begging for.

So if you are begging for pity, for the 'oh you poor thing, I so pity you, you so stress at work, you better eat more, aiyoh you so sad,' … if you want that kind of attention, then you need to work on yourself. Notice that you'll probably get it, but because you get it, you'll probably have a pretty sucky life with all the problems that will allow that kind of loving, pitiful attention to gravitate towards you. So do you have a 'I am too thin, problem, and no matter how much I eat I keep losing weight?'

Or do you have a, 'My boss is a slave driver, problem, and I have to stay in the office until 2 am every day.'

You do get stories to tell your friends every time right?

Well I don't like you bitching too much about the choices you make in your life, and constantly asking me to go, 'aiyoh you poor thing, aiyoh, don't lah like that, you hang in there.'

I think… you should just go hang, because you make the choices in your life, you live with them.

…

Wanna seek attention also, seek the ones that matter lah. Seek the ones where people will envy you. It's WAY WAY MORE gratifying, far far more fulfilling and it gives you a lot of energy to create positive energies in this world (me going new age here, don't mind me).

Dunia ini, macam-macam ada.

Review and Download Free Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows

Whenever all these giant companies comes out with something new, you can find it written all over the Internet. Remember Bing, the new search engine by Microsoft? Well me and many others still think Google search results are way better. Then few days ago I heard about the upcoming free antivirus software called Microsoft Security Essentials created by Microsoft that will provide protection from viruses, spyware, rootkits, and trojans for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. As usual, it was posted everywhere and the first thing that came to my mind was is it necessary to create all that hype?
Download Microsoft Security Essentials
I personally don’t think that Microsoft Security Essentials will dominate the antivirus market even if it is bundled in future version of Windows. Just like Internet Explorer, it comes in every Windows but my monthly web statistics shows that there are more Firefox users than IE. I am very curious to see how good or bad is the upcoming free antivirus by Microsoft so I left work a little early today (of course with my boss’ approval) to test it out.

A good antivirus must have very good detection of known virus through signature and unknown virus through proactive method. Then it shouldn’t now slow down your computer when it is protecting your computer real-time and also during manual full scan. Scanning time and cleaning of virus should be fast. Finally, when an antivirus has proactive defense, there will surely be false detection but the numbers should be small.

download microsoft security essentials

The interface of Microsoft Security Essentials is very easy to use. It doesn’t have too many features to confuse a basic computer user. You have a tab to run a full, quick or custom scan, an update tab to update the virus and spyware definitions, a history tab showing you items detected as potentially harmful and the actions you took on each item and finally the settings tab to configure some options on MSE.

Virus detection (Signature and Proactive)
The virus detection on MSE is very good because it managed to detect all 19 viruses as a potential threat while RISING Antivirus 2009 (sad to say) only detected 75% of it. As for the proactive detection, I am not sure if MSE even has that as I couldn’t find any information about it. I have a private version of trojan which is detected by Kaspersky, Avira and NOD32 but is still undetectable by many other antivirus. MSE wasn’t able to detect the private trojan.

Scanning
A full scan takes 19 minutes to scan 160,000 items. I’d say that MSE has an average scanning speed as I’ve seen other antivirus software that scans at much faster and slower speed than this.

Real-Time protection
I plugged in a USB flash drive that has a malicious autorun.inf file and MSE immediately notify me about the potential threat it found. I also noticed that the real-time protection is a little slow. Meaning when I open a folder that has a virus which is detectable by MSE, it takes quite a long time to tell me that it is a virus. When I got fed up of waiting, I tried running the virus file, MSE blocks the file and prompts for action on the virus.

Action on detected items
Another problem with MSE is the actions such as removing and disinfecting an item is also very slow. This happens when MSE found a potential threat and you click either the Clean computer or Apply actions button.
download microsoft free antivirus

Memory and CPU usage
There are 2 processes by MSE which is MsMpEng.exe and msseces.exe. Both process’ memory usage takes up an average of 60MB during idle and scanning. When running a full scan, the CPU usage goes up to around 40% but never above 50%.

The tests above are done on my desktop computer running a vanilla version of Windows XP Professional SP3 with latest hotfixes. Although the 19 virus that I had is very little to test on but they are real current live virus that are circulating around internet and networks today. As for the private version of trojan, it is also a very popular trojan (I won’t say what is the name) and good antivirus such as Kaspersky or anti-keylogger such as Zemana is able to detect the malicious (injection) activity even though it is not in the virus signature database. Do take note that Microsoft Security Essentials is still in BETA (testing) and if you’d like to try it yourself, you can download from the links below. The installer does a WGA check before allowing you to install.

For Windows XP: mssefullinstall-x86fre-en-us-xp.exe
For Windows Vista and Windows 7 (32-bit): mssefullinstall-x86fre-en-us-vista.exe
For Windows Vista and Windows 7 (64-bit): mssefullinstall-amd64fre-en-us-vista.exe

PKFZ: No PwC report for MPs... yet

Ong Tee Keat's attempt to kick the PKFZ scandal into the Parliament's basket isn't futile.

Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Ronald Kiandee confirmed, and announced in the House today, that we MPs will not get the PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) audit report and its appendix on the Port Klang Free Trade (PKFZ) -- that Tee Keat promised -- until the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has completed its investigation on the matter.

The deputy speaker also clarified that the 300 copies of the report were being kept by the Parliament Cecretariat on its capacity as the secretariat of PAC, because the reports were required by the PAC, first and foremost.

Unless the PAC finishes its job fast, and unless the Parliament will courier the report to us MPs, this means the earliest date we MPs can obtained the complete report is when the Parliament re-convenes on October 19.

So, what's new Malaysia Boleh, and quote OC Phang, what's new capable Malaysians?

Let me repeat, again: This PKFZ scandal is fast becoming an Agatha Christie mystery murder: You have a stinking corpse with multiple fatal stabs, no killers.
